Q. What is travel insurance?

A. Travel insurance protects you against the popular losses that may be encountered during either leisure or business travel. Travel insurance comes in different forms which focus on specific needs. The following is a general description of the types of travel insurance plans available.
"Packaged" plans - a comprehensive package of benefits providing protection against all aspects of potential loss: trip cancellation/interruption; medical; emergency evacuation; baggage insurance. All (except Trip Cancellation) benefits and benefit limits are pre-set. Must be purchased prior to departure.
"Medical" plans - focus on medical and emergency evacuation benefits. Medical plans are designed for long term travel and/or higher limits of medical insurance which may not be offered by some "Packaged" plans. Medical plans are unique because you can obtain coverage after travel has commenced or extend coverage after the original plan has ended.
"Flight" plans - provide Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance while you are on the flight, boarding, alighting or being transported by the airline.

Q. How does Travel Insurance differ from my personal insurance?

A. Travel insurance is designed to provide protection against the perils that frequently occur to vacation and business travelers. Typically, baggage and medical insurance are the coverages that may be duplicated.
Many home owner's or renter's insurance have deductibles. There are no deductibles with Baggage insurance.
In many plans the medical benefit is primary, eliminating the time-consuming task of filing with your personal insurance. The "Packaged" plans do not have deductibles. Additionally, travel insurance will fill the gap and reimburse those amounts that may not be covered by your own insurance.

Q. What is the effective date of the insurance?

A. It depends on the type of coverage and plan selected. In general:
Trip Cancellation insurance goes into effect 24 hours after the receipt of the order by the underwriting company.
Trip Interruption, Baggage, Medical Insurance, Flight Insurance go into effect on your departure date.

Q. When do I buy insurance?

A. The earliest would be the same day, after your initial deposit/purchase of any trip arrangement.

Q. Why should I purchase insurance early?

A. You are eligible to receive time-sensitive enhancements if you purchase a plan within 7 to 21 days (varies by company) from your initial deposit. Trip Cancellation benefits begin protecting you the day after you purchase the plan against a "named peril" of the policy.

Q. How is premium determined?

A. It may vary by company and plan. For Trip Cancellation/Interruption: the cost of the trip, age and duration of your trip. Medical plans focus on the age of the insured person(s), benefit limit and deductible selected.

Q. One of the members of our family is much older than the rest of us. Does that effect the premium?

A. Yes, it usually does.

Q. Why shouldn't I wait until a time closer to departure to buy insurance?

A. Some suggest you purchase travel insurance when the cancellation penalties for your trip become effective. The theory is that you won't have a loss because your pre-payment will be refunded and you shouldn't spend more money than necessary. However, the longer you wait, the greater chance you (or an immediate family member or traveling companion) may develop a "pre-existing medical condition" or another foreseeable event, which wouldn't be covered by the plan.

Q. What's the latest can I purchase travel insurance?

A. The day before your departure. However, we suggest you never wait that long. There is always the possibility you, an immediate family member or traveling companion may develop a "pre-existing medical condition" or a "foreseeable event" may develop which would exclude you from benefits.

Q. Who should be insured for Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance?

A. Anyone who has prepaid, non-refundable expenses in their name. You should also insure minor children even though their arrangements have been paid for by an adult.

Q. How do I determine the amount to be insured for Trip Cancellation?

A. We suggest insuring the total amount of your trip arrangements that will be paid prior to your departure and that are non-refundable.

Q. Are Frequent Flyer Miles Insurable?

A. Tickets obtained through frequent flyer or award points have no dollar value for Trip Cancellation benefit's purpose. However, should your trip end prematurely due to a "covered reason" of the plan, then the Trip Interruption benefit would reimburse the cost of the additional transportation to return you to your home. We suggest you adjust your insurable trip cost to reflect a one-way ticket from your farthest destination back home. Some plans offer a higher Trip Interruption benefit limit automatically that may be appropriate.

Q. Can a trip obtained as an award or through a charitable auction be insured?

A. No. You must have an insurable interest, which equates to your dollar investment in the trip. Ask the question, "What is my financial loss". If you have no financial loss, you have no insurable interest. A trip obtained through a charitable auction is a tax deduction.
